MONITOR · RECOGNISE · ALERT · TRIAGE
MRAT is the recognition and response framework. It begins with Monitor for a reason – your body has been monitoring all along. Your job is to stop overriding the reports.
Monitor. Pay attention to what your body already knows. The unease in someone's presence. The exhaustion after a conversation. The feeling that something is wrong that you can't name. These are not neuroses. They are data.
Recognise. Name what you see. Not the person – the pattern. The four types (Cold, Grand, Hidden, Chaotic) are recognition tools, not diagnostic categories. You don't need a clinical label. You need pattern detection.
Alert. Tell someone. Isolation is the condition the pattern needs. Your coalition – the people who validate your reality – is your protection. Coalition is the grandmother rebuilt.
Triage. Match your response to the situation. Not every encounter needs the same approach. The graduated response scales from grey rock to no contact. Start with the least disruptive and escalate as needed.
Three questions. Three minutes. Before your phone.
1. Who extracted yesterday?
2. What patterns were visible?
3. What did your body detect that your mind dismissed?
The morning check works because it recruits the body as ally. Three questions, three minutes, before the prefrontal cortex has fully constructed the day's narrative. How did you sleep? What do you feel in your body? What are you dreading?
This is not journalling for emotional processing. This is intelligence gathering. Start tomorrow.
DIRECT · DISTRACT · DELEGATE · DOCUMENT · DELAY
Five response strategies scaling from personal to institutional. When you rehearse a specific response – "if I see this, I will do that" – the neural architecture shifts from effortful deliberation to automatic, stimulus-triggered action. The response becomes reflexive. This matters because institutional pressure exploits the deliberative pathway – the more someone has to think about whether to act, the more time social pressure has to talk them out of it.
Direct. Name the behaviour. Calmly, factually, without emotional charge. "That isn't what happened. Here is what happened." Direct works when the power balance allows it and when you have evidence.
Distract. Change the subject. Redirect the interaction. Remove the fuel. Distract works when direct confrontation would escalate or when you need time.
Delegate. Bring in someone else. Your coalition, a professional, a witness. Delegate works when you are too close to the pattern to see clearly or when the situation requires institutional authority.
Document. Write it down. Date, behaviour, your physical response. The pattern journal builds the evidence base that defeats gaslighting – and, more importantly, rebuilds the expectation that perception leads to understanding leads to action. Each successful recognition is a dose of agency.
Delay. The 72-hour rule. Never respond to a provocation in the moment. The urgency you feel is manufactured.

The rule
Write the emails but don't send them. Plan the confrontations but schedule nothing. Document everything. Brief your coalition.
After 72 hours, the reaction that felt urgent becomes the response you chose. That's the difference between being reactive and being strategic.
The graduated response matches your protection to your situation. Not every situation requires the same approach. Start with the least disruptive and escalate as needed.
Grey rock. Become boring. Unrewarding. Emotionally flat. Complete sentences, zero engagement, nothing to extract. Grey rock works because extraction requires your reaction. Drama needs fuel. Without your emotional response, the interaction produces nothing of value for them.
Low contact. Structured interaction with documented boundaries. Not "I'll set better boundaries" – that is unenforceable. Specific, concrete, documentable. "I will respond to messages about the children within 24 hours. I will not respond to messages about other topics." The boundary is a wall, not a suggestion.
No contact. The final boundary. When containment within the relationship is no longer possible, you contain by removing yourself. This is not failure. It is the architecture working as designed.
Recognition tools, not diagnostic categories. You don't need a clinical label. You need pattern detection.
The executive who signs off on safety cuts without flinching. They calculate where you feel. Clinicians call this psychopathic or antisocial – but the clinical label matters less than what you see.
The founder who takes credit for the team's innovation and blame-shifts when it fails. You feel smaller in their presence. Your achievements diminish. The spotlight is always, always on them.
The colleague whose crises always coincide with your deadlines. The partner whose suffering reorganises your entire life around their pain. You feel guilty for existing.
The partner who threatens to leave every month. The family member whose emotional state changes the room's oxygen level. You have forgotten what calm feels like.
Isolation is the condition the pattern needs. The first function of triangulation is to prevent coalition – to stop the people around you from comparing notes. Coalition defeats isolation. It always has.
Your coalition is the people who validate your reality. Not a large group – a small, solid coalition is worth more than a large, uncertain one. The people who believed you before you believed yourself. The people who noticed something was wrong and didn't know how to raise it.
Coalition is the grandmother rebuilt. The pattern cannot survive coalition.
Date. Behaviour. Your physical response. That's it.
The pattern journal builds the evidence base that defeats gaslighting. More importantly, it rebuilds the connection between perception and action. Each entry is proof that you saw what you saw. Over time, the journal becomes the long memory the village had and industrial scale lost.

CONTAIN DON'T BLAME
This framework exists to build containment architecture, not to label individuals. Any use that functions as blame has departed from the framework. Any use that functions as persecution has become the pattern it claims to oppose.
The villages didn't hold empathy workshops for the kunlangeta. They built architecture that worked whether he cooperated or not. Containment is our job, not theirs.
The line between containment and persecution is the line the framework must never cross. That line is held by the True Regard Principles – eight guardrails embedded at founding, not retrofitted.
