The Extraction Pattern

They Knew. They Didn't Care.
Vaughan Smith · Foreword by Katalin Gothard, M.D., Ph.D.

Approximately five per cent of the population carry the extraction pattern – the same neural hardware everyone has, differently configured. For 200,000 years, villages contained this through proximity and community memory. Then industrial scale broke the mechanism. Nobody rebuilt the replacement.

The Extraction Pattern is the first book to build a unified framework integrating clinical psychology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience and institutional analysis at population scale. It traces the pattern from its evolutionary origins through family courts, corporate boardrooms, captured regulators, intelligence failures and the encoding of manipulative patterns in AI systems.

The book argues that the problem is architectural, not characterological. The villages didn't contain the pattern through moral superiority – they contained it through structure. Someone watched. The community remembered. The architecture worked. We need to rebuild it.

With a foreword by Katalin Gothard, M.D., Ph.D. – Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of Arizona, whose research on the neural basis of social behaviour, trust and empathy provides the biological evidence that confirms the framework.

The Capture

How They Stole America
Vaughan Smith

The Capture applies the extraction pattern framework to the United States. Domain by domain – labour, finance, healthcare, media, dark money, digital platforms – it traces how the pattern captured America's institutions, economy and democracy.

Where The Extraction Pattern builds the framework, The Capture deploys it. Names, evidence, mechanisms. The book demonstrates that the institutional failures Americans experience daily – from unaffordable healthcare to regulatory capture to the erosion of democratic norms – are not unrelated problems requiring separate solutions. They are the same pattern, operating across every domain, using the same toolkit.
