The second edition, published in September 2026, withdraws six claims the first edition made. They are listed here because a reader of the first edition has no other way of knowing.
The first edition gave a figure of £300,000 to £400,000 a household across a working life, described in the text as the author’s own arithmetic. It is not in the second edition. Three separate reviews of the manuscript were unable to source it, and the derivation could not be rebuilt from the published ranges it was said to rest on. What replaces it is a floor, built only from official published totals divided by the Office for National Statistics count of 28.4 million UK households, with the arithmetic printed so that each line can be recomputed.
The first edition named the Ministry of Justice’s published family court statistics. That series exists and does not carry the measure: nothing in it records how the court handles the cases in which domestic abuse is alleged. The bet is now set against the Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s own published baseline, and carries a second limb that counts against the book if the Ministry or HM Courts and Tribunals Service begins publishing the proportion routinely.
The first edition bet that the standing independent redress body the Post Office inquiry recommended would not be established by the end of 2031. That bet is withdrawn. It cannot tell the two accounts apart: a body that never gets built is what government does most of the time, and a body that does get built is this book’s own remedy working. Either way it told the reader nothing. It is replaced by a test of outcomes inside schemes run by the body responsible for the harm.
The first edition’s bet on reputation carried a clause about whether a containment architecture for provenance was built. That clause made the bet unloseable, because provenance work is already under way. It is removed.
The first edition set a rate against a count: the adult proven reoffending rate against the annual number of Serious Further Offence notifications. A raw count rises whenever the caseload rises, whatever is happening to the rate, so that bet could have been won or lost for reasons with nothing to do with the claim. Both sides are rates now, from the same publisher, with the baseline recorded and the scoring conditions written down before the fact.
The first edition bet that a safety function would be hollowed at every laboratory built so that the check reports to the thing it checks. With several laboratories and ten years, one resignation letter wins that. It is now structure against structure: laboratories scored nought to three on three public criteria, with hollowing events at the twos and threes measured against the noughts and ones, and a resolution of last resort for the likely case that the comparison group does not exist.
